Magazine Ad Revenue continued decline

US Competitive Info: Magazines Tumble, Debate Ads Rumble. Magazine newsstand sales continued their steady decline in the first half of 2015, according to new figures from MagNet, reported by MediaPost. Total volume of magazines distributed to wholesalers dropped 2.6% to 784 million units comparted to the first half of 2014. But the number of issues sold had a steeper decline, tumbling 18.5% to 207.5 million. Dollar value of magazine sales decreased 13.9% to $1.11 billion. One caveat noted by MagNet is the new numbers may not be an apples-to-apples comparison due to the closing of magazine distributor Source Interlink and the lack of figures from Barnes & Noble. Still, no turnaround is in sight for magazine newsstand sales . MagNet says preliminary data for July and August point to sales falling further in the second half. Meanwhile, the chord that Donald Trump has struck among voters is reverberating for CNN ad sales. The cable news network is asking for 40 times its normal r...

How will radio - Local Auto Media Spend Trending

Image
Radio’s share of local auto dollars to remain above 10%: report. The average auto dealer will spend more than $640,000 on local advertising this year, according to a new report from BIA/Kelsey. Combined with what the carmakers will spend in the local market, it projects $11.3 billion will be spent on local media across all automotive sectors — or more than one out every 10 dollars spent in local advertising . While more dollars are shifting to digital and mobile, the vast majority of automotive ad budgets are earmarked for traditional media. BIA/Kelsey forecasts 77% will go to tried-and-true advertising outlets this year. Radio’s share is estimated at 11.6% for 2015, slipping a point to 10.6% by 2019. “Radio is still an important part of an advertising mix and even as the average quarter hour numbers decrease a little bit, radio still reaches a very sizable portion of Americans,” BIA/Kelsey chief economist Mark Fratrik says. “If you have a local auto dealer with a 72 hour sale thi...

American Media Consumption

Americans are spending more time consuming media content, not less . What’s changing is how they use it and the growing consumption taking place on digital platforms. Those are among the topline findings of Nielsen’s third-quarter Total Audience Report, formerly called the Cross-Platform Report. Smartphone penetration has reached 75%, a 15% jump over the same period last year. Nearly half of Americans own a tablet, up 59% from one year earlier. “ Content is still king, but consumers are shaping their own content-discovery experience, and the evolving media landscape has not lessened consumer demand for quality, professionally-produced content,” says Nielsen SVP of insights Dounia Turrill. “What has changed is the number and reliability of new media available to viewers.” The study’s most profound findings have to do with how Americans are using TV. According to an analysis by Brian Wieser, total year-over-year TV viewing, including live TV plus time-shifting, fell 4% in the third qua...

Auto Ad Spend Growth Chart - Growing

Image
Auto ad spending’s still growing, slowly, with new models and reboots likely to help in 2015. Radio’s automotive ad sales growth has slowed this year, and while the lure of digital may be partly to blame, just-released figures from Kantar Media project total car industry advertising in 2014 will have its slowest growth since the recession. The firm estimates auto advertising will increase just 1% this year with a current pacing pointing to a tally that will reach $16.25 billion. “Total measured ad spending has grown each year since 2010 and is on track to continue that streak in 2014,” Kantar Media chief revenue officer Jon Swallen said yesterday. But the post-recession marketing budgets are merely back to what the car industry spent in 2002. Still, it’s considerably better than the low point of $11.1 billion in 2009. “Since bottoming out, ad spending has increased more than 40%,” Swallen noted during a webinar. Manufacturers still spend the most, accounting for about 60 cents of ...

Digital ads hit-or-miss target - By Product Category

Digital ads hit-or-miss target, depending on product category: comScore. “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” That famous line by department store owner John Wanamaker may need an update in the digital age. An analysis of several product categories shows an average two-thirds (66%) of digital advertising misses its target . Some ad categories are more likely than others to miss their target. Only 42% of retail ads reach the intended target and just 41% of consumer product ads reach hit the bulls eye . It’s 50-50 for auto ads , comScore finds. “Achieving 100% in-target delivery isn’t necessarily realistic and it isn’t always feasible,” comScore senior director of product marketing and ad effectiveness Andrea Vollman said last week during a webinar. “As the target narrows, the likelihood of hitting that target also becomes smaller.” ComScore analysis found that when an advertiser had a broad target, like adults 18+, the ads hit the...

Zenith adjusts ad spend forecast up

ZenithOptimedia has adjusted its ad spend forecast upwards, predicting that the global market will grow by 5.5% in 2014, reaching $537 billion by the end of the year. That forecast is up 0.2% from the last report in December . Ad spend in North America is expected to grow by 4.8% this year, bolstered by the Winter Olympics and mid-term elections. Ad spend in Canada is expected to grow by 3.5% in 2014 versus 2013, with larger gains expected in 2015 and 2016. The internet is the fastest growing medium measured on the global market, and is expected to increase by an average of 16% each year between 2014 and 2016. Mobile advertising is growing six times faster than desktop, and is forecast to grow at a pace of 50% annually from 2014 to 2016. In...
